The most important aspect of an effective school is
to maintain the safety and security of the population. There are
times when individual tempers flare during the school day and issues
need to be resolved before inappropriate conflict arises.
Typically, students who act inappropriately toward somebody else are
sent to the Office of Student Management. If they still have
resentment and anger pent up, the issues they harbor are likely not
resolved. We need assistance in our school with helping students
resolve issues they have with others in the face of potential
conflict.
The role of a Peer
Mediator gets at the heart of students who have ill feelings toward
others. Peer Mediators:
-
Receive training that
allows for objective mediation among students who are highly
volatile.
-
Are placed on a list
for the Office of Student Management to contact when conflicts
arise.
-
Facilitate structured
conversations among students who need conflict resolution as
needed.
Our fourteen trained peer
mediators help resolve potential conflicts among their peers before
they manifest as discipline problems. They are summoned when
conflicts arise to help facilitate constructive conversations and
agreeable outcomes between disputing parties. The security staff at
Tremper determines when appropriate conflicts need to be handled by
Peer Mediation or through the current mediation skills of the staff
and administration.
