Tremper High School embraces the needs
of struggling students by providing two methods of tutoring.
Student Government leaders organized a meeting with members of the
National Honor Society to discuss the creation of a Peer Tutoring
network. About 30 students signed up as volunteers to tutor
students at Tremper who need assistance. They indicated the time of
day they were available and the subject area they felt most
confident in providing tutoring assistance. Cori Meyer, the Student
Government Vice President for Academic Affairs at the time, designed
a referral form that allows for both self and teacher referral.
Within the first day of introduction, nine students had been matched
with a National Honor Society tutor. Presently, the peer
tutoring system resides under the control of the Academic Affairs
committee and encourages any juniors or seniors who have an interest
in helping others academically to apply. Forms can be acquired
in the media center or in the main office. Each year we try and
recruit around 50 tutors.
In
addition to this student-led program, student government also
sponsors a staff assistance program.
A teacher from the academic areas of math, English,
science, and social studies is available every Tuesday and Thursday
after school for tutoring services in the cafeteria. Students
simply need to show up and meet with one of the four available
teachers on each of these two days weekly.
It is expected
that all students learn at different paces and with different
approaches, whether instructional explanations are given by teachers
or by a friend. Tremper is prepared to provide sufficient services
to meet the needs of all these diverse learning needs.
