  7. Communications:  Sandy Rende
    1. The Kenosha PTA Council Newsletter will be sent to our members via e-mail.
    2. If anyone has anything they would like published in the Tremper Newsletter, those items are due on 11-17-09.  E-mail Sandy Rende with any information that should be sent to all our families.
    3. Sandy has heard from a fundraising consultant from Barrington, IL, who is interested in setting up a direct sales partnership.  15% of the total sales would go to the Tremper PTSA.  After discussion, the group was not in favor of pursuing this fundraiser.  Sandy will contact the rep and let her know that we are not interested.
  8. Reflections:  April Solms:
    1. The reflections submission forms are available in the school office.  April has met with the art teacher and asked her to encourage participation among her students.
    2. A suggestion was made to reach out to the English teachers and photography classes as well, so that more students are aware of this opportunity.
    3. Posters have been hung around school, and announcements regarding the program are made regularly.
  9. Student Government:  Rebecca Stoebe
    1. The Diversity Awareness group will be going to the ESC for Diversity Circle Training in early December.
    2. The Spirit group is selling basketball socks, and plan to have a Turkey Bowling competition for one of their fundraisers
    3. The Community Awareness group is organizing the blood drive, which is scheduled for early March, 2010
    4. The Executive board met to review the criteria required for membership.  Strikes were handed out this week for missing service hours, missing spirit activities, and not helping at Homecoming.
  10. Principal’s Report:  Mr. Dick Aiello
    1. Mr. Heideman has retired.  The PTSA will provide a gift certificate to him to thank him for his years of service to Tremper HS.
    2. The Sub-Deb Winter Dance will be January 30th, 2010.  Mrs. Chase is advising the committee this year.  Plans are to have the dance at an off-site location, possibly UW-Parkside.  This dance is open to all grade levels.
    3. There was a question about the grades listed in Zangle.  Mr. Aiello will remind teachers to use the term “not graded yet” vs. placing a “0” score onto a student’s report.
    4. There was a question about the class rankings used.  Why are there so many students in the freshmen class?  Mr. Aiello explained that a student must earn 5.5 credits before he/she can be considered a sophomore.  If a student is credit deficient at the end of 9th grade, he will be retained as a freshman until enough credits are earned to qualify for the sophomore ranking.  During the second year of  school, a student can try to test out of the classes which are credit deficient in order to catch up to his/her peers.  Accelerated Independent Study programs are also available for these students to help them attain those missing credits.
    5. Second Quarter Conferences are December 10th.  This is the same night at the Madrigals Feaste.  All conference activities will be in the West Gym, and parents who are coming for conferences will be encouraged to park in the west lot, and the Feaste attendees will be encouraged to park on the east side of the school.
    6. H1N1:  The attendance office staff is now asking for a reason why a student is calling in sick.  They are trying to track flu-like symptoms.  The most students we had sick with flu-like illness in a single school day was 44.  Tremper would not consider cancelling classes unless 30% of the students were experiencing flu-like symptoms.
    7. Traffic Patterns:  the drop-offs on 85th Street are helping out.  With winter coming, there will be some new challenges getting through the narrower streets.  The committee is looking at reversing the loop on the east side of the school so that traffic enters from the south end, and exits at the North end.  This should help the traffic flow, but will require extra precautions since some of the students will be exiting their cars into traffic.
      1. The stoplight on 85th and 26th is now operational during early release times.
      2. A request was made to re-program the timers on the parking lot lights so the area is not dark before the last students leave the building.
      3. 30th Ave. between 80th and 89th Streets will be resurfaced this summer, and a sidewalk will be placed along the entire route.
    1. The Boundary discussions have concluded.
      1. All of Lance and Lincoln Middle Schools will now feed into Tremper High School.
      2. All of Washington and Bullen Middle Schools will feed into Bradford.
      3. Mahone and McKinley Middle Schools will still send some of their students to each of the three comprehensive high schools, however the majority of those students will attend Indian Trail High School.
      4. The current students who are at Tremper will be allowed to stay at Tremper until they graduate, however transportation will not be provided to those students after the spring of 2011.
      5. In four years, Tremper’s attendance should be around 1950 students.
      6. Guidance transfers will be considered on a case by case basis, but special circumstances must apply to be eligible for Tremper.
      7. Sports:  If there is a current sport that has a designated Freshman team, then Indian Trail High School will have their own team next year.  Otherwise, the ITHS students will play for their previous boundary JV or Varsity teams at Bradford or Tremper.
  1. District PTA Update:  Linda Coopland
    1. The next meeting will be November 26th at 6:00 pm at the ESC.  The organization will focus on planning the Founders’ Day Celebration, scheduled for 2/22/10.
    2. Tremper PTSA has been asked to donate a basket for the Silent Auction, and to donate a centerpiece for the tables.
    3. The Kenosha PTA Council is seeking nominations for the following  awards:  1.  Parent of the Year, 2.  PTA unit of the year, 3.  Advocate of the Year.  If anyone is interested in nominating a Tremper member or teacher for one of these awards, please let Patty Mahoney know.  Nominations are due on 1-25-09.
    4. The theme for the WI PTA Convention this year is:  The Road to Endless Possibilities—100 years of WI PTA.
    5. Scholarship awards:  the deadline for the Kenosha PTA Council Scholarship applications is January 17th.   Application forms are available in the Tremper Guidance Office.
  2. Review of Projects:  Patty Mahoney
    1. Bake Sale:  December 10th.  Please bring baked goods to the office during the school day, or to the PTSA table in the West Gym.  Volunteers are also needed to help sell all the great goodies!
    2. Staff Treat Bags:   We have six students signed up to distribute treat bags to the staff PTSA members at the beginning of conferences.  Thank you!
    3. Progress Report Distribution:  If you are able to hand out progress report for a short while during conferences, please let Patty Mahoney know.
    4. Lunch Sale:  the PTSA will be selling Italian food for lunch on December 3rd.  Please encourage your children to support this sale.  We are also looking for volunteers to provide baked goods to include with the lunch.
    5. Tremper Landscape Beautification:  We have had 1000 bulbs donated that still need planting.  We may need to wait until spring, since it is already getting cold outside.  We are waiting for direction from administration and approval from the Keep Kenosha Beautiful Committee.
    6. Photo Frames:  Town and Country Class donated the glass for the frames.  Sandor Marianyi will work with the committee to get the frames fixed and replacements made for those which are no longer serviceable.
    7. Yearbooks:  Seniors need to make sure their pictures are submitted by the deadline.  There was discussion about changing the format to a Spring delivery for the yearbook so that the graduating class can have theirs before they leave the school.  The spring sports pictures from the previous school year would be used so that the publication deadline could be met.
  3. New Business:  Traffic patterns:  See Principal’s report
  4. Guest Speaker:  Mr. Shebaniah Muhammad, Tremper Assistant Principal
    1. Mr. Muhammad works out of the Office of Student Leadership (room 109).  His primary functions include:  School Safety, Student Discipline, the Freshman Academy, working with the deans and the attendance office personnel, and the credit deficient students.
    2. Mr. Muhammad will also be taking over as the advisor for the Student Government officers starting in January.  His goal is to make sure that as many students can get involved in extra-curricular activities as possible, in order to make their years at Tremper fulfilling and productive.
    3. Mr. Muhammad reviewed the process for student expulsions, and discussed the policies related to tardies vs. truancies.
    4. If you have any specific questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Mr. Muhammad or any of his staff in room 109.
  5.  Adjournment:  The meeting was adjourned at 9:02 pm  (Greskoviak / Cascarano)
