TREMPER HIGH SCHOOL PTSA MINUTES

NOVEMBER 20, 2006

Meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m.  Introductions were made.

Treasurer’s Report – Renee presented the current Treasurer’s Report.  See attached report for the current balance and disbursements.  Current balance on hand is $1,092.50.

Membership Committee – Patti reported that there are currently 230 paid members.  There are also 14 new members that have joined, bring our membership total to 244.  Last year’s membership was 237.

Secretary’s Report - October 16th minutes were approved on a Renee Blise/Sharon Corso motion.  The web site is current and Terri has heard positive feedback from people who access the site.

Vice President’s Report Sharon Corso provided the PTSA with information regarding replacement of the coat racks.  Sharon was able to find a rack with three prongs and will be able to hold 144 items.   Cost of the rack is $994.55.  Sharon will continue to look at other options and continue to update us. Discussion took place how to raise money for replacement of current coat racks.  Possible fundraising idea:  a bowl-a-thon.  Discussion was tabled to a fundraiser meeting to be held at a later date to be determined.

  • Sharon received two e-mails from teachers.  The first one was from Todd Hardy, Special Education Teacher.  He informed Sharon of the Book and School Supply Drive on Saturday, November 25th from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. in front of Tremper.  Tremper Marketing, Girl’s Soccer, Girl’s Softball and the Service Learning Pilot Project Team are all working together on this.  Items collected are going to be sent to our partner school in New Orleans, Louisiana, “McDonogh Senior High”.  McDonogh was severely damaged by Hurricane Katrina and is one of only 5 of the 15 high schools that have reopened since Hurricane Katrina.  A collection for books to help replace books that were destroyed in the Library and school supplies are needed.  The collected items are leaving on November 28th from Tremper and will be delivered to McDonogh Senior High.  Sharon will send out a mass e-mail informing everyone about this collection drive.
  • Karen Wambold, Math Teacher, is in the process of implementing a tutoring center in the cafeteria.  Items needed are paper, pens, calculators and parent volunteers.  Volunteers will be needed from 8:00 a.m. -11:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.  Karen hopes to have this up and running by 3rd quarter.  Sharon will send out a mass e-mail about supplies needed and volunteer opportunities.  Karen will also be invited to speak at our January 15th meeting.  Patti Mahoney suggested putting up a collection bin by the PTSA table during the conferences held on Thursday, December 14th.  A discussion took place about the collection bin, and it was decided to place a bin at the bake sale table.

President’s Report - Terri reminded everyone about conferences on Thursday, December 14th.  A sign up sheet to help with the bake sale was passed around.  Kenosha Unified PTA Council’s next meeting is Monday, November 27th at 6:00 p.m. at the ESC.

Reflections Committee – Janet reported that the packets for Reflections are available in room 109.  Projects are due by Friday, January 5th.  Janet did talk with the art and music teachers about the Reflections program.

Principal’s Report - Mr. Kupka talked about the five areas of implementation.
  They are:
            1. Implementing curriculum with effective instruction

            2. Connecting all students, including disengaged students

            3.  Effective communication and collaboration

            4.  Respectful behaviors and commitment to service

            5.  Successful transitions beyond high school

Parents are still needed for these committees.  If you are interested in serving on a committee, please call the main office.

Mr. Kupka has received tons of positive feedback from staff and students regarding the new bell schedule.

There have been some cases of vandalism in the student parking lot near Ameche Field.

This is being carefully watched.  Students are encouraged not leave valuables in their cars.

The city of Kenosha is putting in a curb on the south end of the parking lot.  This will result in a loss of 112 student parking spaces.  The school administration is also exploring opportunities for senior students in good academic standing to park in the teacher’s lot.

The new addition for the gym is going well.  The new gym should be done ahead of schedule.

New Business

  • Gene Mathias reported on the criteria for the Tremper PTSA Scholarship.  Students must be a current member of the Tremper PTSA, have senior status, and must submit a PTSA essay.  A committee will need to be formed to discuss new guidelines.  Announcements regarding when students can apply will go out in March.  There will be a meeting on January, 15th at 6:00 p.m. in the library for anyone wishing to serve on this committee.
  • Tremper PTSA will donate $100.00 to the Metta Tremper Scholarship.  This was approved on a Renee Blise/Patti Ault motion.  This scholarship is open to all five high schools in Kenosha.  Students must be a current PTA member and plan to attend college to major in an education-related field.  Applications can be picked up at school counselor’s offices and must be returned to the counselor’s office.
