TREMPER HIGH SCHOOL PTSA MINUTES

 SEPTEMBER 18, 2006

The meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m.  Introductions of the Board and Staff were made as well as attendees.

Treasurer’s Report
– Renee presented the budget and explained each line item.  (See attached Treasurer’s Reports.)  The  balance on hand as of September 18, 2006 is $1,064.15.  The budget was approved on a Janet Schoettler/Patty Mahoney motion.

Secretary’s Report -  Monica asked that all board members and committee chairs give out contact information so the website can be updated.  The Tremper website will be updated monthly with current PTSA minutes under the parent involvement tab.

Legislative Report -   Terri explained what is involved with this position and that this position is still open.  Anyone interested in this position should contact Terri.

Membership Committee -   Patti reported that we have 100 members so far.  It was discussed how to do the student drawings each month.  Two PTSA student members will receive a $20 gift certificate and a third PTSA student will receive a parking pass.  Sally Krok will be drawing the names.  The month of September winners are Christopher Martin and Katie Gromacki.  Each of the winners received a $20 gift certificate.  At the September 27th staff meeting, Terri will attend to encourage staff to join Tremper’s PTSA.

PR Committee -   Patty has been working on the PTSA bulletin board.  Discussion took place as to how hard it is to attach any items to the board because the backing is cardboard and not cork.  Monica said she would talk to facilities about getting cork put in place.  Patty posted the names of the student winners for September on the PTSA bulletin board.  Patty will work with Sally to have pictures taken of the winners.

Reflections Committee - The theme for this year is “My favorite place…”  The categories are Dance, Film/Video, Literature, Music, Photography and Visual Arts.   Entries are due December 25th at the local level.  Terri explained the process that the submitted work goes thru.

Principal’s Report – Mr. Kupa talked about the District Strategic Plan and how it was developed.  There was a hand out distributed to all about Tremper’s Strategic Plan.  If anyone is interested in serving on an Implementation Team, please fill out the bottom of the page and return it to the main office.

  1. Also, Mr. Kupa explained the new bell schedule and why it was put in place.  Students this year will have Advisory on Monday and Wednesday and will be dismissed at 2:55, and on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, they will be dismissed at 2:28.  This will allow for student interventions/collaborations and will give students a chance to get help in a class if they fall below a 70% in that class.  If a student is below a 70% in two classes, the teachers will have to determine where that student should go on that day for the intervention.
  2. The seven minute passing time is working well.  So far, no complaints have been voiced.
  3. Tremper has twenty four new staff members.  They are: Staci Braya (Science), Charese Brown (Math), Susan Buckley (CDB), Deanna Dourlain (English), Jessica Garrett (Social Studies), Caroline Haebig (Social Studies), Melissa Jakubowski (English), Sarah Keel (Special Ed.), Adam King (Social Studies), Jeff Laurent (French), Michelle Marschel (FCS), Diana McCarthy (Social Work), Rina Pignone (Italian), Sonia Powers (Special Ed.), Anne Rasmussen (Library), Matt Rizzo (Special Ed.), Jennifer Sproul (English), Heather Ward (CDB), Chuck Wolbers (Special Ed.), Bill Clark (Interpreter), Nicole Mitchell (Community Impact) and  Beth Phillips (Interpreter).  There are also two student teachers and they are Luke Thompson with Jackie Valeri and Drew Baker with John Wilhelmson.
  4. Mr. Kupa reported that Pat Demos is interested in doing a “Book and Dinner” again this year.  It would be one night a week in November.  More information to follow.
  5. Evening with the Counselors dates to remember:  September 20th – for Seniors “ABC’s of College” @ 7p.m. and September 27th – for Juniors: Career & College Decisions” @ 7 p.m.
  6. On Monday, October 16th, the freshmen and sophomore classes will listen to a presentation called “Rachel’s Challenge”.  The message of this presentation is “Treat others how you would like to be treated.”   This is a very moving presentation.  Rachel was killed in Columbine.  Either her father or brother will be here to present this.  Other dates and times for this important presentation are:  Monday, October 16th 7:00 p.m. at Mahone Middle School and on Tuesday, October 17th at Reuther Central High School at 7:00 p.m.
  7. Discussion about boundaries came up.  Meeting dates for the proposed boundaries are as follows:  Thursday, September 21st at 6 p.m. at Bradford High School Auditorium, Wednesday, October 4th at Lincoln Middle School Auditorium at 6 p.m., Tuesday, October 17th at Tremper High School Cafeteria at 6 p.m. and on Saturday, October 21st at the ESC  Board Room at 9 a.m.
  8. There were 2,600 t-shirts printed up and each student received one at registration.  Sponsors are listed on the back and the marketing classes helped with this project.
  9. Mr. Kupa stated that walkways are now painted for the portables.  Just a friendly reminder, go around the portables when dropping off or picking up students.
  10. As of today, Tremper High School has 2,439 students.  This is a preliminary number.  Final numbers for enrollment will be available in October.

There were no member or staff questions or concerns.

Meeting was adjourned at 8:30 p.m. on a Patti Ault/Renee Blise motion.

Respectfully submitted,

Monica Yuhas
