TREMPER GIRLS GOLF
HISTORY
A brief(Has it been 27 years?) history of the Tremper Girls Golf Team
In 1984 Nancy Phipps approached the school board with a proposal to instate a girls'
golf team at Tremper. Coincidentally, Bradford too was interested in starting a
team and, with support from community leaders and key board members, the girls' golf
program became a reality. The first season was fall, 1985 and was preceded by a clinic,
financed by the school district and taught by coaches Fennema and Becker as well
as coaches Bradshaw, and Nancy and Dennis Phipps.
Our first year was rocky. We started with eleven girls but finished the season with
only nine. Our number one player was Krista Sikora, a player with experience gained
from playing on the boys' team at Tremper. The remaining girls were beginners but
we were building for the future.
Before our second year Dennis and I were able to get out and recruit during the off
season. We were able to sign some good athletes, kids who were not golfers but who
would become good players by their junior and senior years and make Tremper a competitive program. Once that happened getting kids out for golf became easier and we were
able to attract athletes who had traditionally turned to tennis as a fall outlet.
Krista Sikora played number one again in '86 but Chris Regner, a first year sophomore
was out, and would step into that number one spot down the road. In our second year the
team averaged 270 strokes in a nine hole meet with a 2 - 10 varsity record. We finished
5th in the conference meet and 8th in the regional.
In 1987 our team average drops from 270 to 261 and our record improved to 4 - 6 on
the varsity and we posted a 6 - 4 junior varsity record. We finished 4th in the conference
meet and 10th out of 14 teams at the sectional. This season was highlighted by
wins over Bradford and Westosha Central. Teams we were unable to beat in our first
two years but teams we have not lost to since '87.
1987 was Krista's last year on the team, and she was named to the all-conference
team. Krista missed qualifying for state by two strokes.
In 1988 our team average dropped again, this time to 237 from 261 and our record improved
to 5 - 5 on the varsity and 8 - 2 on the junior varsity. We finished 4th at the
conference meet and 7th, out of 13 teams, at the Sectional. We were starting to
attract a lot of good athletes to our program, they did well at the JV level, but they
were beginners. Because Kenosha did/does not have the junior feeder programs present
in Racine it made it difficult for our kids when they stepped up to varsity. Our
kids were competitive but these Racine schools were playing kids on varsity with years
of golfing experience who were stepping right on to varsity squads as 9th graders.
Chris Regner played number one in '88, a senior now and averaging 53 strokes for
nine holes, down from the 73 she averaged as a sophomore. In 1988 the first Kenosha News all-County
team was named, this because of my urging, and Chris Regner and Sara Sampica were
named from Tremper.
In 1989 our team average was 247 for a nine-hole match and our record was 5 - 6 on
the varsity but 10 - 1 on the JV level. We finished 4th in the conference meet,
behind the 3 Racine schools and 6th out of 15 schools at the sectional meet. Jamie
Gayheart played number one for us in '89. She averaged 57 strokes for nine as a senior, down
from her 78 stroke average as a sophomore. Jamie just missed qualifying for state
that year, finishing 6th individually (top 5 go). Jamie and Nicole Kopp were named
to the All-County team that year. In 1989 I started a junior golf program in Kenosha.
It is financed by the Recreation Department, through the good offices of Bob Clark,
for girls ages 6-18 and includes two days of clinical instruction and a 9 hole tournament
at Muni.
I am happy to say that many girls, playing for Bradford and Tremper, have come through
this program.
In 1990 our team average was 248 and our record on the varsity 3 - 8. Our junior
varsity record for '90 was 7 - 4. Again we finished 4th in the conference meet, behind
the Racine schools but tied for 6th at the sectionals. Compared to other schools
in this section of the state we were doing well but the Racine power-houses were still
too good. Nicole Kopp was our number one player in 1990, with an average of 55,
down from 65 as a sophomore. She was 6th at the conference meet, and was named to
the All-Conference team as well as the All-County team for a second time. Kristen VanDeloo
was also named to the All-County team and placed 10th in the conference meet.
In 1991 our team average dropped to 235 from the 248 we averaged in 1990. We had
pretty good depth in '91 with Kristen VanDeloo playing number 1, averaging 54 for
nine holes. But we had had a super recruiting season and 5 freshmen on our team
where averaging in the 60's. Our numbers were also up. With 26 athletes on our team Dennis
and I had our hands full and I was pushing hard for an assistant coach. That year
Kristen finished 6th in the conference meet as well as the sectional, missing state
by one place and, along with Bridget Ball was named to the All-County team (her 2nd year
for that honor). Our record in '91 was 7 - 4 on the varsity and 11 - 0 on the JV
so we knew we had some special young kids who had come to us with golf experience.
I was expecting good things in the next few years. An important side bar, Dan Swift came
on board as a paid assistant this year (after the team size grew to 30 girls).
In 1992 two sophomores, Rachel Plens and Leigh Ann Mondrawickas split duty at number
one. Rachel's average was 56 and Leigh Ann's average was 55. Our win / lost record
this year was 4 - 7 but, again, the JV was undefeated and the team, young by any
standards, really came on strong at the end of the season. Highlights in 1992 included
a third place finish in the Big Nine Conference meet, a third place finish in the
regional and a fifth place finish in the sectional. Again, it was Leigh Ann and
Rachel leading the way. Leigh Ann was named to the All-Confernce team and along with Rachel
finished in the top ten in the conference meet. Rachel's 91 in the regional helped
Tremper to a third place finish and stood as a school record. We were finally beating
the Racine schools. Leigh Ann was also named All - County as was Rachel.
1993 was a great year for Tremper Girls' Golf. It is safe to say that we had one
of the best teams in the state, with depth and talent, on any given day, there was
no team we could not beat. Rachel Plens emerged as the number 1 player with a 48
average but the depth on the team kept her on her toes. Our varsity record that year was 5
- 3 but those 3 loses came at the hands of the teams which finished 3rd, 4th, and
6th in the state that year. We were shooting scores in the 190's for nine hole matches
and were a team to be reconded with each time we teed it up. Our team average was 210.
We finished 5th in the SEC meet in '93 , fourth in the regional, again qualifying
for sectional play. At the sectional Rachel Plens made team history
by qualifying for the state tournament. She finished 5th, individually in the sectional
and went on to finish 39th at state. Rachel was again named to the All - County
team along with Melissa Sullivan, and Amy Bosman.
1994 was the year that we were to contend for the state title. We had great talent,
experience and depth. Our program, which started from ground zero 9 years before,
was poised to go all the way to the top. Leigh Ann Mondrawickas was playing a consistent number one, Rachel, Jill Sivley and Melissa Sullivan rounded out the top four with
All - County player Amy Bosman at five and a number of girls able to step up and
fill in any of these spots. We established all kinds of records in '94: team 9 hole record 184 v. Horlick; team 18 hole record, 383 at the
regional; JV 9 hole record, 209 v. Bradford.
We finished 2nd, 3rd, or 4th in the multi-team meets we competed in that year and
finished 3rd in the SEC conference meet. The highlight of our year was a 184 to 185 victory over Horlick
(they would go on to win the state title that year!). In the regional meet we finished
2nd behind Horlick and were confident going into the sectional that we would qualify
for state. Our team did not have a good day at the sectional but Rachel qualified again for state by finishing 4th individually
. She would go on to finish 30th at the state meet in 1994 to top off a great career
at Tremper. The All - County team reflected Tremper's dominance in '94 with four
players named: Rachel Plens, Leigh Ann Mondrawickas, Jill Sivley and Melissa Sullivan.
1995 was to be a good year but we lost more kids than we had planned. Melissa Sullivan,
a three-year varsity player and All - County golfer decided not to play, which left
the team leadership in the hands of Jill Sivley alone. We had juniors with talent
but they were untested on the varsity level. Sivley would play number one and have
a great year, setting a school record for 18 holes, an 80
, which stands today. The JV would be conference champions for the fourth or fifth
year in a row. The varsity would set a new school record of 378
during sectionals and finish third in the conference behind Case (2nd in state) and
Horlick (3rd in state). After a 3rd place finish in the regionals Tremper went on to finish 3rd in the sectional (our highest finish ever), but failed
to qualify for state.
Jill shot 90 in the sectional meet but, because the individual players on Case and
Horlick were so good, failed to qualify individually. All - County players in '95
were Jill Sivley and Ellen Santarelli. Jill Sivley's individual ave
for the season, 46, set a team record.
This brings us to 1996. In '96 our team average was 207. Zoe Frank played number
one this year, with a scoring average of 50, down from 67 as a freshman. The team
was going through a rebuilding year (with a 207 average!!!!) in '96. Playing in
the SEC is just brutal. Its the toughest conference in the state...our 207 average would have
won most conferences, but not the SEC. Our two big wins this year were against Bradford
and Westosha (they won their conference), and qualifying for sectionals by finishing 4th in the regional and then finishing 4th in the sectional were also highlights.
Our team also finished third in the Antioch invitational, two strokes out of first,
against teams that are good teams by Illinois standards. Named to the All - County
team were Zoe Frank and Katie H. Katie also made all conference, 2nd team while
Zoe made all conference 3rd team.
In 1997 our team average was 226 and our record on the varsity was 4-5. Our junior
varsity was first in the Conference Meet. The varsity finished 4th behind Case(1st in the State), Park (3rd in the State) and Horlick. The number 1 spot was shared between
Katie H and Anne S. They both averaged 55 for nine holes. Katie H made the 2nd Team All-Conference. Anne S and Suzie F were named to the 3rd Team All-Conference. Named to the All-County team were: Katie H and Anne S. The team did not make it through Regional. Katie H. won the Vic Aiello Golf Scholarship($1,000), this was the first year a girl was awarded this scholarship.
1998 was a rebuilding year for the team, with only two returning letter winners. The varsity ave was 224 and our record in duals was 4-4. Joining the coaching staff, this year was Wendy Matrise. The JV team won the Conference meet again!!!!! The varsity finished 4th (behind Park , second in the State, Case, third in the state and Horlick). The number one spot was shared by Anne S and Katie S. Anne S. was named to the All-Conference 2nd team, the All-County team and finished 6th in the Conference Meet. Katie S. was named to the All-County Team. The team did qualify for the Sectional. Also playing varsity: Lauren G (a freshman!!), Erica O (sophomore), Jenni C (senior), Elly S (sophomore)....so the future looks bright.
In 1999, the team had no seniors out. On the other hand, the we had 12 freshwomen. The biggest group the team has ever had....with that many new faces the future looks bright.
With only two returning letter winners on the team, the team did well. We lacked in tournament experience and that showed, but these young players will only get better if they stick with the game. The team had its highest finish in the conference...we finished 2 nd!!! yea!! The JV finished first (they only had 1 loss and that was with everyone playing once). The team captains were: Erica o and Elly S. The Tremper girls on the All-County Team were: Erica O (Junior) and Kristin S(sophomore). Also named to the SEC All-Conference 2nd Team: Alyssa P. With such a great young team, the sky is the limit next year. The Assistant Coach this year was Wendy Matrise and the Vol. Assistant Coach was Dennis Phipps...thanks go out to both of them.
Playing varsity: Kristin S, Erica O, Lauren G, Alyssa P, Jennifer F, Ashley Z.
2000 was a great year for Girl's golf in Kenosha County and Tremper High School. The whole varsity returned and I expected a good year and we had a good year. The girls played some Summer Tournaments and played more golf than usual....and that is what it takes to get better. Again we finished 2nd...behind Park!! yea!! The JV finished first (again...take a look at our JV history at Tremper). We won our Regional..that was a first!!! yea! The team did not make it through the Sectional but Westosha did.
The team captains were: Erica O and Elly S...next year's will be Kristen S. Those named to the All-County team were: Erica O and Kristen S. Tremper players on the All-SEC team: first team: Erica O, Alyssa P and Ashley Z Second Team: Kristen S....WOW!!! These girls all be returning next year. The Assistant Coach this year was Wendy Matrise and without her assistance we would not have accomplished everything that we did. Playing varsity: Kristen S, Erica O, Alyssa P, Ashely Z, Lauren G, Jennifer F. The team will miss the following graduating seniors: Erica O, Jennifer F, Elly S....good luck girls.

THE STATE QUALIFERS FOR 2001:
TREMPER AND PARK
2001 was an interesting and exciting year for the girls and the coach. The numbers were down this year...why I do not know, but we had quality!! With the thirteen girls that came out for the team, we broke all the old school records except Jill S's....Yea(see the records section)!!! The team came in second in the conference behind Park...again. The JV team came in FIRST in the conference....go Tremper JV. The team
captain was Kristen S and Ashley Z. will be next years captain. Those named to the All-county team were:Kristen S, Lauren G, Ashley Z, Alyssa P. Tremper players on the ALL-SEC team: first team: Kristen s.
second team: Lauren G, Ashley Z, Alyssa P....what a year. The team qualified for the first time for state
and those qualifiers were: Kristen S(12), Lauren G(12), Ashley Z(11), Alyssa P(11), Laura T(11), Kelsey O(11). The team will lose the two seniors but the rest will be back and hopefully ready for 2002. The team
started the season with no assistant coach, but through the kindness of friends two women came forward and volunteered to share the responsibilities. They were: Marjorie Meyer and Tracy Gaudio(a pass member of the team and now a Tremper teacher)....without these coaches we would never reach the heights we did.
.....many thanks go out to them. Playing varsity: Kristen S, Lauren G., Ashley Z, Alyssa P, Laura T, Kelsey O.
Good Luck is extended to the Seniors: Kristen S and Lauren G as they move on to College.
THE 2001 TREMPER GIRLS GOLF TEAM
2002 was a record year for Girls Golf at Tremper High School!! We broke most of the Tremper records set over seventeen years
see the Records page). The Assistant Coach in 2002 was Marge Meyer and without her efforts we could not have
accomplished all the things we did. As you can see if you look at the team picture we had a much larger team this
year, with nine ninth graders coming out for golf. The Varsity team won Conference(for the first time), JV won
conference, the Varsity placed first in Regional and Sectional, and finished 8th at State. The Team captain was
Ashley Z. The All-County members from Tremper were: Alyssa p, Ashley z, Kate b, Kelsey o. The All-Sec team members
were: Alyssa p, Ashley Z, Kate B. The team qualifiers for State were: Alyssa p(12), Ashley Z(12), Kelsey o(11),
Kate B(9), Sarah P(9), Laura T(12)...What a year!! Playing varsity for Tremper were: Alyssa P, Ashley Z, Kelsey O,
Kate B, Sarah p, Laura T. Good luck is extended to the Seniors: Alyssa p, Ashley z, Heather J as they move
to College.
THE 2002 TREMPER GIRLS GOLF TEAM
2003 was a rebuilding year for Tremper Girls Golf. We lost two key seniors last year, but the girls did well. The Assistant coach in 2002 was Marge Meyer, but because of personal reasons the team had to search for help in the form of Jackie Valerie...thanks go out to both of our assistants. We had nine ninth graders last year and this year only one?? The varsity and jv won the County meet, came in second in the Conference standings(the jv won conference), Tremper won the WIAA Regional. In the Sectional, we hit stiff competition in the form of the State Champs...Brookfield East!! The team captain was Kelsey O. The All-county members were: Sarah P, Kate B, Kelsey O. The All-SEC team members: First team: Sarah P, Second team: Kate B.
Playing varsity for Tremper: Sarah P(10), Kate B(10), Kelsey O(12), Amanda M(10), Amanda F(12), Jeanna M(11). Good Luck is extended to seniors: April D, Amanda F, Mo M,
Kelsey O as they too move on to College.

THE 2008 TREMPER GIRLS GOLF TEAM
With only one returning letter winner (Jamie e) in 2009, it took the team a while to gain the experience it need to compete with Case and Park. THE 2010 TREMPER GIRLS GOLF TEAM
THE 2011 TREMPER GIRLS GOLF TEAM
2011 was a year to remember. This team shattered so many records...see the records set in 2011, in the record section of the website. Two memorable moments early on were winning the Schroeder Memorial and the Trojan Match Play tournament. The team tied its
team ave of 2010 with a 176 ave. The Varsity and JV won Conference Titles in the SEC!!!
The dual meet record was : 7-0, for both teams..crowd noise(Yea). The team did well in the SEC tournament: Lauren K -first, Al V-4th, Jaime e-5th, Elise-7th, and because of these scores the team finished the day in first place. The JV finished in 1st place in their tournament too. Allie S was 1st, Taylor M-2nd, Sam C-3rd, Nicci G-4th.
The team won the Regional and went on to finish third in the WIAA Sectional(losing out to Brook Central-who went to State). We lose five seniors this year and they will be missed...I wish them all well as they move on to the colleges of their choice.
